Can I Give You One Small Piece of Social Media Advice for Your Small Business?

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

It’s kind of a big tip, to be frank. Bookmark this page!

I know for many small businesses, “get better at social media” is always on your To-Do list.

This little piece of advice will help you recenter yourself & your account:

Focus on CONSISTENTLY providing VALUABLE content to your audience.

Let’s break that down a bit.

CONSISTENTLY: find a posting schedule that works for you. Maybe posting everyday can easily become part of your daily routine. But if that’s unrealistic for you, start smaller, with posts every other day, 3x a week. Do what feels good to you, and what you can realistically stick with.

VALUABLE: what makes a post valuable? This will depend greatly on your business & line of work, so you’ll need to do a little soul-searching here. If you were a stranger, or a follower of your own account, what would you want to be seeing from your social media? What kind of information or entertainment could you be sharing that will help people naturally desire to do business with you?

We’ve pulled together some examples on ways you can be providing value through your social media accounts.

Tip #1 - Engage with your followers by responding to comments and messages promptly.

Encourage open dialogue and provide useful information. If you're encourage people to engage with your content, make sure you're engaging right back!

Format each tip's title to H2 to keep your post neat.

Tip #2 - Share content that is relevant and valuable to your target audience.

Offer helpful tips, industry news, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your business. The type of info you share will vary greatly depending on the industry you're in and the type of work you do, so definitely think about this one before posting willy-nilly.

Tip #3 - Use high-quality images and videos to grab attention and illustrate your message.

I'm not trying to hurt your feelings, but no one wants to see your blurry square photos or your sad boomerangs. Take some time to either go out and intentionally take good photos and videos that you can share, or else hire someone to do it for you. Don't forget, you can occasionally rely on a tasteful stock photo! Just make sure it doesn't look irrelevant or salesy.

Tip #4 - Encourage customers to share their experiences with your business.

If it makes sense for your biz, encourage customers to share their experiences with your business, and then repost it on your social media platforms. You might reshare a few photos or videos of customers using your product, or attending your event. This resharing not only provides valuable content but also shows your customers that you appreciate their support.

Note: if all your account does is reshare content, you are not providing unique value, and need to rethink your strategy.

Tip #5 - Offer exclusive deals and promotions to your social media followers

Extend special offers just to your followers to incentivize them to engage with your accounts. This makes your audience feel special, and rewards them for being a loyal viewer.

Tip #6 - Use analytics tools to measure your efforts

Keep track of your social media efforts so you can make informed decisions about future strategies. You might use the tools built in within Instagram or Facebook, or you might use a 3rd party tool like Hootsuite, Hubspot, Later, Sprout Social, etc.

Whatever you choose, pick a metric, focus on it, and start building and sharing content to help you improve in that metric category.

Focus on the value. Build with consistency.

By following these tips, you can provide value to your target audience and build strong relationships with them through social media. Pick something, and stick to it!
